Chapter 5

Marcus was glad now that they’d left the children with his mom. There were so many scary people in this room that even his cat was being extra quiet. But still, Dakota needed this can of worms opened, and as a family, they’d shot the can all to hell. Hiding his smile under his hand, he thought he should behave.

The men and women, all of them, were in uniforms studded with pins, ribbons, and medals not only on their chest but up their sleeves and across their shoulders. They were all armed too. As were the men and women around the room with heavy jackets on, their faces covered and their weaponry right out there where you could see it.

Then there was the president himself. A thick file was opened in front of President Kenneth. Everyone was waiting on him to finish looking over the information from both sides. He’d skimmed quickly over the other folder but was taking his time to read the reports and information that had been brought to him by their attorney.

The four men they’d been able to link to the death of Michael Sullivan were sitting across from Dakota and himself. Harper was sitting in their section, as well as Samson and a man he didn’t know who was there to represent Michael. Posthumously, of course.

Questions were put to Dakota a couple of times. She answered them fully. Such as why she had felt the need to leave her hometown so abruptly. The judge was told, in great detail, how the townspeople turned against her when they were told her husband was a traitor to his country. He then asked her how she’d been notified of this information.

“I wasn’t notified by the army if that’s what you’re asking me. Not until I made a call to the US Army office after I read about his death in the local newspaper. I was tossed a newspaper with the front page headline of it. The neighborhood decided I needed to be told over and over by having the article, along with a picture of myself and my husband, plastered to our home, the yard, and car. There was no peace for my daughter and me, so leaving was the only choice we had.” She snorted before continuing. “I also had threats against my daughter and I, written out in great detail on what they were going to do to me when they got me. I feared for mine and my daughter’s lives after that.”

“Do you have the written threats with you?” She told him there was a certified thumb drive of the ones that came via her phone, but the written ones were also in the back of the folder he was looking at. “These are copies. I’m assuming you’ve put the originals away someplace safe. Good for you.”

This went on for another two hours. He’d ask questions of Dakota or the men responsible for Michael’s death, then read some more of the reports. When he finally closed the file, he looked directly at Dakota.
